Why We Make Lard Based Soap and Why It Matters

When people hear the word lard, they often think of cooking. What many do not realize is that lard has been used for centuries as a skincare ingredient, long before commercial soaps and synthetic detergents existed.

At The Crow’s Croft, we make lard based soap because it is simple, effective, and deeply nourishing for skin. Just like with our food, our approach to soap starts with intention and transparency.

What Lard Based Soap Is

Lard based soap is made using rendered pork fat combined with lye and carefully selected oils or botanicals. During the soap making process, the lye is fully transformed and does not remain in the finished bar.

The result is a gentle, hard bar of soap that cleans without stripping the skin.

Lard creates a soap that is naturally compatible with human skin because its fatty acid profile is similar to the oils our skin already produces.

Why Lard Is Exceptional for Skin

Lard produces soap that is:

• mild and gentle

• long lasting and hard

• creamy rather than bubbly

• moisturizing without feeling greasy

People with sensitive skin, dry skin, or irritation often find lard based soap more comfortable than commercial soaps that rely on harsh detergents.

The Problem With Commercial Soap

Most store bought soaps are not actually soap at all. They are detergent bars made with synthetic surfactants, fillers, and fragrances designed to maximize shelf life and profit.

These products can strip natural oils from the skin, leaving it dry, tight, or irritated.

We believe soap should clean without causing damage.

Why We Choose Simple Ingredients

Our soap philosophy mirrors our farming philosophy. Fewer ingredients. Clear sourcing. No unnecessary additives.

By using lard as a primary ingredient, we are able to create a bar that does its job well without relying on heavy fragrances, dyes, or fillers.

Simple does not mean basic. It means intentional.

From Farm to Soap Bar

Using lard connects our soap directly to our farm. It allows us to honor the whole animal and reduce waste while creating a product that genuinely benefits people.

Our lard comes from pigs raised on pasture with the same care we put into everything we produce. That care carries through into the finished soap.

Why Lard Based Soap Feels Different

Many customers tell us the same thing after switching to lard based soap. Their skin feels clean but not tight. Moisturized but not coated.

That is because lard based soap works with your skin rather than against it.

Soap Made the Old Way Still Works

Modern marketing often tells us that newer is better. With soap, that is not always true.

Traditional soap making methods have endured for a reason. They work.

At The Crow’s Croft, we make soap the way it has been made for generations because good ingredients and thoughtful processes do not need reinvention.
