Lard and tallow are both traditional fats that have been used in soap making for generations. While each has a place in skincare, they are not interchangeable. At The Crow’s Croft, we intentionally choose lard because it performs better for daily use, sensitive skin, and long term comfort.
What Lard Is and Why It Excels
Lard is rendered pork fat. When properly rendered, it is clean, mild, and exceptionally compatible with human skin. Its fatty acid profile closely mirrors the natural oils our skin produces.
This similarity allows lard to nourish and protect the skin without overwhelming it. Lard absorbs easily and supports the skin barrier rather than sitting heavily on the surface.
Why Tallow Is Different
Tallow is rendered beef fat. It is firm and stable, which makes it useful for products designed to create a heavy protective layer on the skin.
However, tallow can feel dense or waxy for many people, especially when used in daily soap or all over body products. For some skin types, this heaviness can feel occlusive rather than nourishing.
How Lard Feels on Skin
Lard based products feel balanced and comfortable. Skin feels moisturized but not coated, clean but not tight.
This makes lard an excellent choice for:
• sensitive skin
• frequent hand washing
• daily bathing
• changing seasonal conditions
Lard Versus Tallow in Soap
In soap making, lard produces a hard long lasting bar with a creamy stable lather. It cleans effectively while maintaining the skin’s natural moisture.
Tallow also produces a hard bar, but the lather can feel heavier and less forgiving, especially for people prone to dryness or irritation.
For everyday soap, lard offers a more universally comfortable experience.
Why We Choose Lard at The Crow’s Croft
Our goal is to make soap that works for most people most of the time. Lard allows us to create gentle reliable products without relying on palm oil, synthetic additives, or unnecessary fillers.
It aligns with our philosophy of simple ingredients and thoughtful sourcing.
Sustainability and Whole Animal Use
Using lard allows us to honor the whole animal raised on our farm. It reduces waste and ensures that every part of the pig is used with purpose.
This connection between farm and finished product is central to what we do.
Which Is Better
For heavy barrier creams or extreme conditions, tallow may have a place. But for everyday soap and skincare, lard consistently delivers better results for more people.
That is why we choose lard.
Our lard comes from pigs raised on pasture with care and intention. That quality carries through into every bar we make.
Lard is not an old fashioned ingredient. It is a proven one.
